Week 4 Term 1 2024
Dear Families,
It has been a big week this week, with lots of learning happening, National Young Leaders Day, Parent Information Night, Pink, Taylor Swift, Sausage Sizzles and Pie Day Friday.
Along with all that has been happening, we are continuing to work on our 3 practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, which we as Catholics work towards during Lent.
At school, the children are encouraged to commit during Lent. The commitment could be anything from a promise to help mum every day during Lent, to a promise of a kind act each day, to one of their siblings or a classmate. You could encourage your children to do this by asking questions and complimenting them when they make a special effort.
We also have Project Compassion Boxes in the classroom where the children and staff are encouraged to give to those who are struggling in Australia and the world.
WOODBURN UPDATE
Our visit to the school at Woodburn for a building meeting this week showed some great progress. Our Admin building is coming to life and the builders have started some work in the Stage 2 classrooms.

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT THANK YOU
Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Parent Information Night this week. It was a great community night starting with the Sausage Sizzle get-together and ending with the individual class information presentations. Thank you to our groundsman Paul Lyons for being our chef extraordinaire and to the teachers for their efforts and preparation of the night.
Three important points that I mentioned in my meeting with parents at the commencement of the night were:
- St Joseph's Woodburn Review 2024- This year our school will be undertaking a School Review. The Review will be held in Week 10 of Term 2. A Review is the perfect time to reflect and see how we are working as a school. It will be a time to celebrate the good things we are doing and a time to learn how we can improve. The Review looks at all areas of School life through the 9 Parameters of the School Improvement Tool. More information will be provided as we get closer to the date.
- What will the Parent Forum look like in 2024? We are looking at 2 new Diocesan Models of Parent Meetings this year. On Monday 8 March 2024 at 6 pm will have a meeting in the School Library, hopefully with as many parents as possible to put forward their thoughts for us going forward. Mrs Janita Thomson, Lead of Parent Partnerships/Mission Services at the Catholic Schools Office, Lismore will present the 2 Parent Meeting models for us. We will work to provide babysitting to help people to attend.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY
Nick Felsch
Ben Polson was the first Ninja Warrior Champion. He is a DJ and music Producer and has his own YouTube Channel with over 500,000 followers. Ben Polson taught me to keep pushing even through hard situations, just like he did when he was getting bullied. He talked about being a strong person and the importance of telling at least one close friend if something is going wrong. He taught me that you don't have to do what's cool, you can just do what you love and enjoy doing. Believe in yourself and do the hard work.
Ayla Stahl
Anastasia Wolmer is the Australian Memory Champion, she can memorize 40 numbers. She explained that she remembers the numbers as pictures.
Anastasia Wolmer used to be a Ballet Dancer, she danced all over the world. She retired from dancing at 28 years old and then studied economics at University.
Some of her lessons: The harder you try, the more you achieve. Everyone learns differently. Don't compare yourself to others. Look into difficult situations in different ways.
She inspired me to never give up and keep on trying even if you feel like you're not good enough.
Cooper Bailey
Eva Amores and Matt Cosgrove are the co-authors of the 'Worst Week Ever' Series.
Their talk inspired me to just keep trying no matter what; to use time wisely, and to have a growth mindset by giving everything a red hot go.
The circumstances that led to their inspiration included their books being rejected by the publisher, however, when they tried again and got it right. They used time wisely by writing "The Worst Week Ever' series during the COVID 19 Pandemic. They gave things a go when they put their mind to it and they did it.
Some of their important messages include, having a positive perspective, push yourself, be playful and persevere.
Philippa Swanson
When Lachie Smart was growing up, he and his friends all wanted to do something but they kept on thinking, "I can't do this" or "I'm not good enough" or "I'm too young". Lachie wanted to prove those voices and people wrong and show them that kids can do anything. The only problem was he didn't know what he was going to do. Lachie finally decided that he wanted to be the youngest person to fly solo around the world. He needed lots of funding to support his trip, so he started talking to companies. Every company he approached said no. His dad told him to keep on trying, so he gave it one more shot and told them what he really thought (instead of what he thought they wanted to hear) and he finally got a sponsor.
Whenever Lachie started to give up he thought that if I work hard, I can do anything.
Lachie teaches us that anyone can do anything and if we work hard we will get where we want to be.
Lachie Smart is the youngest Australian to fly solo around the world.

SUNDAY GOSPEL READINGS - 1st Sunday of LENT
Gospel Reading Mark 9:2-10 Jesus is transfigured in the presence of Peter, James, and John.
When we hear words of praise or encouragement, we sometimes say that we have
been affirmed. To affirm something is to say yes to it. In the Gospel this week we learn about an important affirmation experience in the life of Jesus and his disciples. It is called the Transfiguration.
During Lent we seek to change our lives for the better, looking for ways in which we can be more faithful to Jesus. But we might also identify those aspects of our lives that we want to affirm and to continue. We want to recommit ourselves to the good things in our lives, for example, prayer and service to others. In our prayers, we could try to identify one thing in our life that we should be affirming during Lent and one thing that God might affirm in our lives.
Donating to Project Compassion is one way that we can live the Gospel values of generosity and compassion
Traditionally Shrove Tuesday is the Celebration before ASH WEDNESDAY the first day of the Church’s Liturgical Season of Lent. As some families traditionally fasted during Lent on Shrove Tuesday they used all their eggs, milk and flour to make pancakes.
Thank you to the families who support this fundraising – your generosity is most appreciated. Together we raised $93 for Project Compassion.
Sacrament of Penance - Preparation for Celebrating First Holy Communion
We believe that the passing on of our Christian faith, values and traditions is a true gift that our parents can share with their children.
Parents of students preparing for the Celebration of the Sacrament of PENANCE are invited to the three sacramental family meetings on Mondays at the School at 3:15 pm.
The Sacrament of Penance meeting dates are:
Session 1 - Monday 26th February
Session 2 - Monday 4th March
Session 3 - Monday 11th March
The celebration of the Sacrament of Penance will be on Saturday 16th March at 4 pm in the Anglican Church Evans Head. All Welcome to attend.
PROJECT COMPASSION
As a school family, we will support Project Compassion - Caritas Australia this Lenten season, to help support vulnerable people around the world, now and for all future generations.
With your support, Caritas Australia has been able to support communities around the world in tackling poverty, food security, education, water and sanitation and disaster risk reduction.
Project Compassion 2024 reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. Together, we can help vulnerable communities face their challenges today and build a better tomorrow for all future generations.
You can donate through Project Compassion donation boxes which will be sent home on Ash Wednesday or, by visiting caritas.org.au/project-compassion. Please return Mission Boxes to school by Friday 22nd March 2024
