Week 7 Term 2 2024
Dear Families,
This week we had the wonderful opportunity to meet with prospective parents and Kindergarten students for 2025. It was a true joy for us to be able to share with them all the amazing attributes that make our school so unique:
- Our committed and professional staff who strive to give our students the best possible learning and life experiences.
- We have amazing students who joyfully teach us, and each other daily about the most positive and best way to live and care for each other.
- We are well accompanied in the learning and teaching journey by a supportive family community.
- We strive to be Catholic in word, action and service.
- We offer opportunities such as after-school Lego Club and lunchtime creative activities.
- We promote student leadership skills through the positions of School Captains, Vice Captains-Mision, Sports House Captains, Student Representative Council Leaders and Kindergarten Buddy roles.
- We reach out, serve and help others through Mini Vinnies, the Student Representative Council and special appeals.
- We have 2 Youth Regional Ministry Officers who share amazing experiences and games with us fortnightly
- The social-emotional wellbeing of our students is vital. We have a terrific team of a Pastoral Care Coordinator, a Student Support Officer and counsellor, and an invested and dedicated staff to support our students.
- We are blessed to have wonderful learning spaces and playground facilities at our Evans Head site.
- We are 'going home' to our Woodburn School with beautiful refurbished facilities this year.
SHOUT OUT TO THE YEAR 6 HOUSE CAPTAINS
Last Tuesday we had our 400m and 800m races leading up to the St Joseph's Athletics Carnival that will be held next Friday. We were extremely proud of all of our students for their participation and incredibly determined effort in the races. Their school spirit and encouragement of all were outstanding!
A special shout out to the Year 6 Sports Captains who were terrific in leading their Sports Houses last Tuesday for the races and war cries but also for their work and effort over the last weeks to firstly create a health hustle and then teach and lead their House teams to learn and present them. We think you are AMAZING!
KINDERGARTEN 2025
We are enrolling now for Kindergarten 2025. We would appreciate your help spreading the word that our wonderful school's enrolment is now open. As we get closer to 'going home' to Woodburn, we want to grow our school and share the amazing new spaces. Please spread the word!
Thank you for your ongoing support.
PARENT FORUM MEETING
MONDAY 17 MAY 2024
Our next Parent Forum meeting will held on Monday 17 June 2024, at 6 pm in
the library. We would love to see some new faces and hear new ideas to
grow and support our school. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
STAGE 1 MASS
BASED ON LOVE
Stage 1 led us in a beautiful Mass on Friday, that focussed on love. From the welcoming ushers to the readers, the leaders of dancing, and the video with Stage 1's insights on what love is, it was a wonderful celebration. Thank you Stage 1, Ms Nilon and Mrs Jett. Thank you to the many parents who joined us.
SCHOOL REVIEW
A reminder that we will undergo our School Review in Week 10 of this term. During that week for three days, a Lead Reviewer from ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) and two Principals from schools within our Diocese will visit and review our school around the following nine domains:
- Driving an explicit improvement agenda.
- Analysing and discussing data.
- Promoting a culture of learning.
- Targeting school resources.
- Building an expert teaching team.
- Leading systematic curriculum implementation.
- Differentiating teaching and learning.
- Implementing effective pedagogical practices.
- Building school-community partnerships.
On one of the three days, we will invite parents as a group to talk to the team. The dates for the Review are 2, 3 and 4 July. Please save the date if there is a possibility that you can join us and speak with the Review Team. We appreciate your feedback.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION -11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 4:26–34 The reign of God is like a mustard seed.
Jesus was sent by God the Father to establish God’s kingdom of love here on earth. Jesus began by teaching and preparing a small group of twelve disciples to help spread the Good News of the coming of the Kingdom of God.
The parables in the Gospel this week focus on seeds. Seeds are small; the mustard seed is especially tiny. Yet from these seeds a great crop of grain and a tree large enough to house birds in its branches can grow.
What do these two parables tell us about the Kingdom of God? Someone needs to sow the seeds; it has small beginnings; it takes time to grow; it welcomes all people just as the birds found a home in the tree. As members of the Church, Jesus counts on us to continue his work. We the living disciples of Jesus can sow the seeds by spreading his word by our actions and love.
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Vinnies NSW supports tens of thousands of individuals and families each year who are experiencing financial and housing insecurity. Compared to previous years, Vinnies NSW has seen a concerning growth in the number of people seeking assistance through necessity.
This year, the Winter Appeal focuses on the Working Homeless, an emerging group of people who are experiencing housing hardship and disadvantage despite being in employment. Our SRC Fundraiser PYJAMA DAY - (Gold coin donation) Monday 1st July support of the 2024 Vinnies Winter Appeal will help rebuild lives and dismantle the communal constructs that lead to disadvantage in the first place.
St Joseph's SPIRIT OF JESUS AWARD
At St Joseph's we encourage our students to look for the goodness in others. Our school Vice Captains-Mission this year Aya Stahl and Cooper Bailey have been given the responsibility of helping to acknowledge students who demonstrate the attitudes and gospel values that show the Spirit of Jesus.
If we have the spirit of Jesus in our hearts, we are kind, compassionate, welcoming, cheerful, friendly, encouraging, giving, forgiving thankful, and respectful. This week the Spirit of Jesus Award was presented to Jackson Marsden and Nancy Butler at the school assembly.
