Week 9 Term 2 2024
Dear Families,
Early next term I will have the opportunity to spend some time with our Kindergarten students for 2025 and their parents during their interviews. It will be a joy to have one-on-one conversations with our pre-schoolers. I love their enthusiasm, excitement and initial understanding of all that big school holds. It will also provide a wonderful opportunity to talk to our current and new parents. I am particularly interested to hear why people chose St Joseph's for their child. From their responses, we will get a snapshot of our school from the outside looking in. We get to know how some of the community feels about the teaching and learning; the inclusiveness; the values; the community and the Catholic ethos that permeates all.
We continue to strive daily to make St Joseph's the best school it can be, and in that process, we always welcome and value your input. A reminder to our current families who would like to enrol siblings for next year, we are enrolling students now. You can enrol online on our School website. I hope to commence enrolment interviews in Week 3 of Term 3 (5 -9 August 2024). Junior Joeys will begin on Wednesday 21 August (Week 5 of Term 3). Please spread the word to friends and relatives looking to start their child in Kindergarten in 2025.
WOODBURN UPDATE
Last week I visited our school at Woodburn for a building meeting. I hadn't been for a few weeks and was truly excited to see how far the building work had come and absolutely delighted with the realisation that, 'going home' for us is getting closer and closer.
SCHOOL REVIEW
Next week Tuesday- Thursday (2-4 July) St Joseph's will be involved in a School Review. Over the 3 days, a Lead Reviewer from ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) and two Principals from schools within our Diocese will visit and review our school around the following nine domains:
- Driving an explicit improvement agenda.
- Analysing and discussing data.
- Promoting a culture of learning.
- Targeting school resources.
- Building an expert teaching team.
- Leading systematic curriculum implementation.
- Differentiating teaching and learning.
- Implementing effective pedagogical practices.
- Building school-community partnerships.
It will be a reflective and informative process that will result in affirmations and commendations for areas of the above domains. There will also be recommendations that will go into forming our Strategic Plan for the next 3 years.
We have organised a timetable over the 3 days to ensure that everyone has input into our Review On Day 1 Tuesday 2 July, I have dedicated the timeslot of 2.30pm - 3pm as an open invitation for parents. I encourage parents to join the Review Team in the school for a group chat to provide their thoughts about our school. We truly appreciate you taking the time.
KINDERGARTEN SHARES MRS MCMANUS' NEWS
Kindergarten made a surprise announcement at assembly on Tuesday afternoon. During the day on Tuesday, they discovered the wonderful news that Mrs McManus is having a baby.
As only Kindergarten could, they kept it a secret all day and made the grand announcement to everyone at the afternoon assembly. A lot of cheering from all followed the news.
We are so excited for Sarah and her husband Scott and wish them all the best for this wonderful time.

needed a chillout PJ day. Students may wear their warm and cosy clothes to school and are asked to bring a gold coin donation. Each of the Stages will be doing varied activities between lunch and recess.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION -13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel Reading - Mark 5:21-43 Jesus heals an unwell woman and raises Jairus’s daughter from death.
People told Jairus that his daughter had died. Jesus, however, told Jairus to have faith and not be afraid. Jesus healed those who were sick and suffering, and he calls us to care for those who are in need. We show our care for others when we ask for Jesus’ help, just as Jairus showed his care for his daughter by asking Jesus to help her. We can pray for people who are sick or having a hard time. We can ask that they experience Jesus’ healing love and care.
St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Vinnies NSW supports tens of thousands of individuals and families each year who are experiencing financial and housing insecurity. Compared to previous years, Vinnies NSW has seen a concerning growth in the number of people seeking assistance through necessity.
This year, the Winter Appeal focuses on the Working Homeless, an emerging group of people who are experiencing housing hardship and disadvantage despite being in employment. Our SRC Fundraiser PYJAMA DAY - (Gold coin donation) Monday 1st July support of the 2024 Vinnies Winter Appeal will help rebuild lives and dismantle the communal constructs that lead to disadvantage in the first place.
St Joseph's SPIRIT OF JESUS AWARD
At St Joseph's we remind our students that they are the living disciples of Jesus. We also encourage our students to look for the goodness in others. Our school Vice Captains-Mission this year Aya Stahl and Cooper Bailey have been given the responsibility of helping to acknowledge students who demonstrate the attitudes and gospel values that show the Spirit of Jesus.
If we have the spirit of Jesus in our hearts, we are kind, compassionate, welcoming, cheerful, friendly, encouraging, giving, forgiving thankful, and respectful. This week the Spirit of Jesus Award was presented to Ayla Stahl at the school assembly.

FAMILY CONNECT IN ACTION
Hello there St Joseph’s Woodburn family, Cassie here from the Family Connect in School program. I'd like to introduce “Family Connect in Action’, a new addition to the school’s fortnightly newsletter. Each edition will give you links to information and resources to help you on your parenting journey.
My first edition is to let families know about the school Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) which can provide:
Free internet for eligible families
The Australian Government has introduced the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to provide free internet access to eligible families. The SSBI provides internet access to up to 30,000 families with school-aged children who are currently unconnected. The free internet access will be provided until 31 December 2025.
Am I eligible?
Eligible families:
- have a child living at home enrolled in K-12 at a NSW school
- have not had an active National Broadband Network (NBN) internet service for the previous 14 days. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- reside in a premise that can access a standard NBN service
- will undergo a suitability assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre (NRC). This is just a phone call or online application.
If you require any further information or assistance with an application, contact Cassie from the Family Connect in School program at 0427620667 or contact the National Referral Centre – run by Anglicare Victoria – on 1800 954 610 (Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm AEDT), or visit: https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
