WEEK 1 Term 3 2024
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 3! I hope you all had a relaxing and restful holiday with your children. The children have returned to school with enthusiasm and joy and are ready to begin the 2nd Semester for 2024!
In Week 3 of this term, I look forward to spending time with our Kindergarten students for 2025 and their parents during their interviews. It will be a joy to have one-on-one conversations with our pre-schoolers. I love their enthusiasm, excitement and initial understanding of all that big school holds.
A reminder to our current families who would like to enrol siblings for next year, we are enrolling students now. You can enrol online on our School website.
Junior Joeys will begin on Wednesday 21 August (Week 5 of Term 3). Please spread the word to friends and relatives looking to start their child in Kindergarten in 2025.
Our Year 5 students were busy yesterday working with Mrs Jan Saymour on screenprinting the new Junior Joey's T-shirts. Year 5 are very excited to meet their new buddies for 2025.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Our Parent Teacher Interviews will be held next Tuesday 30 July. These have been arranged using our online booking system. Thank you to the parents who booked.
Parent-teacher interviews are valued and supported by both parents and teachers. At these interviews, parents and teachers can celebrate successes and work through any recommendations and goals to improve learning outcomes for the remainder of the year.
As you know, Legislative requirements mandate that students are assessed using a grade scale, which can cause some anxiety for parents. These interviews can allay any of these anxieties by discussing and supporting grades that have been given
by teachers.
During the interviews, teachers also have the chance to walk through students' portfolios that contain work samples and assessments. They will be used to discuss and support a student's report in context. The portfolios are a celebration of success as well as a record of assessment tasks.
As each interview will last only the dedicated time it is a good idea to write down any questions, queries or concerns so that they are not forgotten. Interviews must run on time so that families are not left waiting unnecessarily.
We thank you for your interest in assisting your child/children by attending these very important interviews with your child's teacher.
SCHOOL REVIEW
In the last week of Term 2, we completed our 3 years cyclic School Review process. We thank the panel of reviewers, our students, staff, families, and the Catholic Schools Office for the tremendous support, celebrations and reflections offered during the reviews.
St Joseph's received praise for its high commitment to education, faith, wellbeing, and overall positivity among students, staff, and families. The insights provided in the form of commendations, affirmations and recommendations will help shape the school's future direction through a strategic plan. We are proud of all we have achieved as a community and look forward to the next steps of growth and improvement. As a staff we have commenced the beginning steps for the way forward and will ensure we keep our parents and students informed and involved as we progress.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION -17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel Reading: John 6:1-15 Jesus feeds the crowd of more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish.
In this week's Gospel, we read that there were more than 5,000 people in the crowd. One of Jesus’ disciples found a boy who had five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus blessed the food and had the disciples give it to all the people in the crowd. All the people were fed. No one was left hungry. In fact, there was even food left over. Jesus’ miracle was a sign that he is truly the Son of God. Through Jesus’ miracle, we learn that with God, there is always enough. Jesus calls us to be generous with others, just as he was. We can give our kindness, we can offer to help others, and we can share. Even if we have just a little to give, we can trust that Jesus will work with what we have to be generous.

St Joseph's SPIRIT OF JESUS AWARD
At St Joseph's we remind our students that they are the living disciples of Jesus. We also encourage our students to look for the goodness in others. Our school Vice Captains-Mission this year Aya Stahl and Cooper Bailey have been responsible for helping to acknowledge students who demonstrate the attitudes and gospel values that show the Spirit of Jesus.
If we have the spirit of Jesus in our hearts, we are kind, compassionate, welcoming, cheerful, friendly, encouraging, giving, forgiving thankful, and respectful. This week the Spirit of Jesus Award was presented to Thomas Walsh at the school assembly.

FAMILY CONNECT IN ACTION
Hello there St Joseph’s Woodburn family, Cassie here from the Family Connect in School program. I'd like to introduce “Family Connect in Action’, a new addition to the school’s fortnightly newsletter. Each edition will give you links to information and resources to help you on your parenting journey.
My first edition is to let families know about the school Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) which can provide:
Free internet for eligible families
The Australian Government has introduced the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to provide free internet access to eligible families. The SSBI provides internet access to up to 30,000 families with school-aged children who are currently unconnected. The free internet access will be provided until 31 December 2025.
Am I eligible?
Eligible families:
- have a child living at home enrolled in K-12 at a NSW school
- have not had an active National Broadband Network (NBN) internet service for the previous 14 days. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- reside in a premise that can access a standard NBN service
- will undergo a suitability assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre (NRC). This is just a phone call or online application.
If you require any further information or assistance with an application, contact Cassie from the Family Connect in School program at 0427620667 or contact the National Referral Centre – run by Anglicare Victoria – on 1800 954 610 (Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm AEDT), or visit: https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
