WEEK 5 Term 3 2024
Dear Families,
JUNIOR JOEYS
The Junior Joeys 2024 Transition Program commenced last Wednesday. Our new tiny brave boys (we had a few children who couldn't make it) gave it their all for their first day at big school. They loved all that the morning held for them and had lots of fun meeting all the girls and boys and teachers when they explored the classrooms and offices. They even got to go to DRUMBEAT with the current Kindergarten.
Junior Joeys will continue next week on Wednesday from 9 am until 11 am and we can't wait to see what they do next.
BOOK WEEK
READING IS MAGIC
It has been a terrific week of celebration of Book Week. We have had the Book Fair in the Library, which keeps us very busy, with 3 x daily visits from very excited students who are taking their time to make their very important purchases. The library has a special reading nook this week, created especially for Book Week. We had our 'concrete garden' activity on Wednesday afternoon and today we had our Book Character Parade, open classrooms, parent book reading, Indigenous games and Pie Day Friday with so many mums, dads and family joining us. This afternoon we had a reward screening of 'Matilda' for the whole school for the students' terrific efforts in the Premier's Reading Challenge. All in all, it has been a wonderful MAGICAL Book Week!
GOOD BYE MISS JOHNSTONE AND THANK YOU
We have had a Practicum Teacher in Kindergarten for the past 2 weeks. The children and staff have really enjoyed having Miss Charlie Johnstone working with them. Charlie came down from Darwin to be part of our St Joseph's staff. Thank you Charlie for being involved in every way over the past 2 weeks. We wish you all the best for the future.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY BREAKFAST
FRIDAY 30 AUGUST 2024
FATHER'S DAY STALL
ST JOSEPH'S WOODBURN WORKING BEE
As we get closer to going home to our school at Woodburn, we are getting a lot of interest and questions about when the parents and children can see and visit the school and how they can help in some way at our school. We now have a date to make that possible through a St Joseph's Woodburn working bee. Parents, students and community members are more than welcome to join us.
When: Saturday 21 September 2024
Time: 9am-12 md
Please bring shovels, rakes, gloves, hoses, pressure cleaners, wheelbarrows etc. We are working to bring our gardens to life and do any other necessary jobs around the school.
We are grateful to a group of people from Western Australia (VERO) who will be joining us to help with the work and will financially support a coffee van, jumping castle and barbeque. Casino Rotary has kindly offered to be chief chefs at the barbecue.
STAGE 2 CAMP
Congratulations to our Stage 2 students for their outstanding performance during the Coffs Harbour excursion! Your enthusiasm, courage, and care for one another made the trip truly memorable. We’ve heard nothing but positive feedback about how much fun you had and how eager you were to embrace new experiences.
A heartfelt thank you to Mr Sandral, Mrs Boyd, and Amy for their unwavering dedication and support over the three days. Your round-the-clock care and encouragement were invaluable and greatly appreciated.
Well done to all!

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel Reading John 6: 60-69 -Simon Peter confesses his faith that Jesus alone leads us to heaven
Simon Peter and the the other Apostles did choose to be Jesus’ disciples. In this week's Gospel Simon Peter tells Jesus what he and the other disciples had come to know about him—that Jesus came from God the Father and Jesus could lead them to eternal life.
As we grow in our faith, we will make our own choices about how we live it. But we can’t do this without God’s help and the help of the community of faith, the Church. We pray that God will help us be like Simon Peter and the disciples who chose to follow Jesus, living a life of service, love, and compassion.

PETER MITCHELL - MAKING JESUS REAL
On Thursday this week, our school family was blessed with a visit from Peter Mitchell (Mitch). Mitch wrote the student book "Making Jesus Real", and co-authored the student text "The Spirit of Jesus." He spent time with each class and explained to our students that the little things we do and say can make Jesus Real today. It is the way we Greet, Treat and Speak to others that is important, and WE ARE THE EYES, EARS, HANDS and FEET of JESUS in 2024. Mitch spoke about one of the greatest ways to have a relationship with Jesus is to journal where they see HIS presence in others and most importantly in themselves. He also shared the following prayer with students and staff:
Jesus has no body now in 2024 but mine
He prays through me
Works through me
Looks through my eyes
Listens through my ears
Speaks to others through my words
Works through my hands
Walks through my feet
And Loves through my heart.
St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)
St Joseph's SPIRIT OF JESUS AWARD
At St Joseph's we remind our students that they are the living disciples of Jesus. We also encourage our students to look for the goodness in others. Our school Vice Captains-Mission this year Aya Stahl and Cooper Bailey have been responsible for helping to acknowledge students who demonstrate the attitudes and gospel values that show the Spirit of Jesus.
If we have the spirit of Jesus in our hearts, we are kind, compassionate, welcoming, cheerful, friendly, encouraging, giving, forgiving thankful, and respectful. This week the Spirit of Jesus Award was presented to Roy Bennett and Katy Hull at the school assembly.

FAMILY CONNECT IN ACTION
Hello there St Joseph’s Woodburn family, Cassie here from the Family Connect in School program. I'd like to introduce “Family Connect in Action’, a new addition to the school’s fortnightly newsletter. Each edition will give you links to information and resources to help you on your parenting journey.
My first edition is to let families know about the school Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) which can provide:
Free internet for eligible families
The Australian Government has introduced the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to provide free internet access to eligible families. The SSBI provides internet access to up to 30,000 families with school-aged children who are currently unconnected. The free internet access will be provided until 31 December 2025.
Am I eligible?
Eligible families:
- have a child living at home enrolled in K-12 at a NSW school
- have not had an active National Broadband Network (NBN) internet service for the previous 14 days. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- reside in a premise that can access a standard NBN service
- will undergo a suitability assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre (NRC). This is just a phone call or online application.
If you require any further information or assistance with an application, contact Cassie from the Family Connect in School program at 0427620667 or contact the National Referral Centre – run by Anglicare Victoria – on 1800 954 610 (Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm AEDT), or visit: https://www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet/
The Council of Catholic School Parents is hosting a FREE parenting webinar with parenting speaker and author, Justin Coulson. This webinar will unpack:
- The root causes behind the deteriorating state of mental health, and who (or what) is responsible.
- The tools you need to reverse this trend for your children.
- Realistic approaches for managing screen time in a way that protects your child's wellbeing.
- Creating margins in your home and family life to protect and promote mental wellness.
